How spray tanning works
- A fine mist of tanning solution containing Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is sprayed onto the skin.
- DHA (a colourless sugar) reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum to produce a temporary brown colour.
- This reaction is similar to an apple browning when exposed to air and doesn’t affect natural melanin.
- The tan begins to develop within a few hours and reaches full depth within 24 hours.
- The tan is temporary, fading as dead skin cells shed — typically 5–10 days.
